Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology

The body of an infant or a child is different from that of an adult. This makes it impossible to apply the concepts of adult medicines to a child’s smaller body. Issues like congenital defects and genetic variance are causes of great concern in babies and children, and need special attention by trained physicians. This is where Pediatrics and Neonatology comes in. It is a special wing in medicine that exclusively caters to the medical needs of infants and children.
Vijayalakshmi Medical Centre offers Level 3B neonatal care with a 1:1 patient to nurse ratio. The Pediatrics and Neonatology department works jointly with the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to cater to all neonatal and pediatric emergencies.

The facilities at VMC’s pediatric wing includes:

An 8-bed Neonatal ICU.

State-of-the-art medical equipment such as Ventilators, Incubators, Blood Gas Analysers, Pulse Oximeters, Syringe/Infusion Pumps, Blue Phototherapy, Colour Doppler and Central Oxygen.

Experienced nurses, providing one on one care for infants and children.

Resident pediatrician, available round the clock.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Vijayalakshmi Medical Centre has a capacity of eight beds, providing 24-hour service on a one-to-one basis. VMC offers intensive care for babies with multiple problems. The staff is well-equipped to handle cases like extreme premature/IUGR, Meconium Aspiration Syndrome, RDS and Neonatal Jaundice, among others, which require interventional treatment. The hospital has three divisions based on the grading of risk:

Critical Care: This is ideal for high risk babies, who need interventional treatment, constant monitoring and modalities such as artificial ventilation or exchange transfusion.

High Dependency: Inborn babies who are cases of extreme preterm birth or have neonatal problems need close monitoring. Also, in-utero transfers call for exclusive attention. The high dependency division looks into such cases.

Low Dependency: Special cases such as low birth weight babies need focused attention including hygienic nursing care and conscientious feeding technique, besides close observation. The low dependency wing offers such meticulous care.

Other Pediatric care services at VMC

Neuro-related developmental assessment and intervention.

Growth, nutrition and development monitoring including counselling on nutrition.

Screening and monitoring for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) & in-house cryo therapy, when indicated.

Screening for hearing.

Essential care for high risk pregnancies

High risk pregnancies need critical attention to prevent risks to both mother and baby. For the same reason, a woman with high risk pregnancy is moved to the hospital prior to delivery and is placed under CTG monitoring. Timely interventions are made, as and when required, to avoid preventable complications to the mother and the newborn.
